Chicago格式是一种英文论文中常用的引用格式，让我们在论文中注明所引用资料的出处，这样读者就可以在论文尾处的参考文献中迅速找到本资料的来源。
芝加哥引用格式有两种类型：
第一个是注释参考书目格式(Notes-BibliographyStyle)；
第二个是作者年代格式(Author-DateSystem)。
下面我们来解释一下什么时候需要使用哪一种格式。
注释参考书目格式一般是由研究人文学科领域（如文学、历史、艺术等）的学者使用的。使用种格式的时候，文献是以编号的脚注或尾注形式引用的。每个注释与文章中的一个升序的数字（上标）相匹配。一般来说，原文也出现在单独的参考文献中。注释参考书目格式允许使用各种各样的资料，包括一些不太符合作者年代格式要求的资料。
作者年代格式是在科学和社会科学界中更常用的。按照这种格式的要求，需要把被引用的原文作者的姓氏和出版年份写在正文中（一般是在括号中写的）。每一个引用都对应于参考文献清单中的条目，而此清单包含全面的参考文献信息。

至于不同online书籍资料（包括URL与数据库），没有具体的页码的话，可以在注释中标明章节名称或本章节的其它标数字。没有这种标数字的情况下，我们只能省略这方面的信息。而至于别的类型的电子书，需要提供其标题。

在注释中，需要提供具体的页面。在参考文献中，需要指明整个文章的页码范围。至于在线参考的文章（包括URL或数据库），许多期刊文章列出了一个DOI（数字对象标识符）。DOI构成一个永久的URL，此URL以https://doi.org/开始。需要注意的是，该URL比出现在浏览器地址栏中的URL更合适。
